Unexpected Guest

I had an unexpected guest.
Tonight, as I drove up to my door,
She was sitting in the garage, no less.
Was it me she waited for?

She was nervous, hesitant, a tiny thing.
She didn't know what I would do.
So when I spoke, she began to sing,
A little song called, "MEW!"

A tortoise cat, and fancy that!
She was so happy to see me!
Her song was lovely (although a bit flat)
But an opera to my ears, believe me!

She serenaded me with a dream
Promised loyalty, tried and true.
I thanked her with fish and cream,
Any less would never do.

In gratitude I made a bed,
With a box and felt cloth to lay.
I thanked her kindly, and I said,
"It would be an honor for you to stay."

She lapped the milk, and smelled the fish
and she seemed to be guessing.
"Tomorrow will see," she said, and returned to her dish.
So I hope tomorrow will have a little Blessing.
A very old, nearly-forgotten poem about my old cat, Groucho.  From 2005.
